Activities:
· Start off the lesson with a class discussion. Ask the class why people go to work and have jobs. You can probably expect answers such as for money or because that’s what my mommy and daddy do.
· Elaborate on the money answer. Why do we need money? Let students answer. We need money to buy things that we need. We also use money to buy things that we want.
· Hold up or show a picture of some of Eric Carle’s most popular books, such as Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? and The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Ask students if they recognize these books or books that they’ve see that look similar to the ones you are showing.
· Explain that these are books that are illustrated by an artist named Eric Carle.
· *Show the class the video of Eric Carle at work. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=q1sQb7YOFu0 and/or https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=fvRcCKP5v6Q
· *Did everyone see how Mr. Carle used his artwork in the illustrations? He puts emphasis on the pictures by putting them on a white background a lot of times. Emphasis means areas that are stressed and attract the eye. Mr. Carle also uses contrast to put emphasis on different parts of his illustrations by using bright colors to attract your eyes. Contrast means opposition or differences of elements. Being an artist is Eric Carle’s job. He makes art to make money so that he can buy things that he needs and wants. The makes and sells art to fulfill other’s wants. This book is not something that I need to survive. It is a want.
· There are many jobs that provide wants and needs for others. Can anyone name a few? Student might say: police officer, trash collector, store clerk, teacher, babysitter, etc. Go over what each job provides after every suggestion. Make a list on the board of which jobs provide wants for people, which jobs provide needs for people, and which jobs provide both needs and wants.
· Have students go back to their seats and write a sentence about a job that provides a want or a need for that person and/or others. Have them draw a picture to go with their sentence. Students needing help thinking of ideas can look at the chart on the board for something they can write and draw about.
Assessment Plan: Teacher will use the class discussions to monitor students learning. Student work (the sentence and picture) will be collected to assess what they got out of the lesson and if they understand how jobs can help people meet their needs and wants.
