Activities:
· Read Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts. The story talks about wants and needs of families. The little boy in the story wants the cool, new shoes that everyone at school has. His grandma tells him that they don’t have money for things like that and they he really only needs new snow boots.
· Talk with students about how families have needs and wants. Some discussion questions could be: What did the little boy in the story want so badly? Why did he want what he did? Why did his grandma tell him that they didn’t need that? What did their family actually need? Discuss times when student have wanted something, but really did not need it. Discuss things that families need.
· Explain to the class that you are going to show a video about a little boy from North Carolina, just like them, and his family. It happened earlier this month in the news, so it is called a current event. Current events are stories from the news that are happening around the world.
· Watch cnn video: http://www.cnn.com/video/data/2.0/video/living/2014/11/21/be-stylish-be-a-champ-nws-orig.cnn.html
· Ask if someone can tell you what the video was about. It was about a 5 year old boy who saved his family from the house fire. The family got out just in time with only the clothes that they were wearing. Have a class discussion about what this family now needs to survive. (clothes, shelter, food, etc.)
Assessment Plan: Teacher will monitor class discussions as an informal way of listening and checking for understanding.
