Those Shoes by Maribeth Boelts, illustrated by Noah Z. Jones: Jeremy is obsessed with "those shoes," those black high-tops with the white stripes that all the other kids are buying. But his grandma tells him, "There's no room for 'want' around here, just need," and what Jeremy needs are winter boots. When Jeremy finally finds those shoes, one-size-too-small, in a thrift shop, he endures blisters, band aids, and limping before he frees himself of his obsession through an act of generosity.

The Bag I’m Taking to Grandma’s by Shirley Neitzel, pictures by Nancy Winslow Parker: This is a great read aloud book for kindergarten aged kids learning the difference between wants and needs. The boy packs what he thinks he needs for visiting his grandma’s house; and then, his mother comes along with a differing perspective. There are several great activities online that go along with this book such as a blank suitcase where students draw items they would take to someone’s house. This book provides not only a teachable moment, but it also gives the reader the opportunity to learn more about the kid’s interest.
